Bono is ‘knighted’
Bono was ‘knighted’ the other day. I guess this isn’t that cool considering Elton John and Conrad Black are also ‘Knights’. But let’s face it, anything Bono does is cool.

Not sure if you’ve heard of this yet…interesting stuff being promoted by Oprah.
Check it out on John Stackhouse’s Blog
Pretty Wacky…Oprah is great, but…this ain’t so great! I think it may even contradict her work in Africa and the 3rd world. How do people their make their lives better unless we help them. Does she have a Western World hat on in Chicago and then a 3rd world hat on abroad…looks like she does???
We just finished a teaching series that looked at the 7 churches in Revelation. It had to be one of the coolest series I’v ever been a part of.
7 letters, to 7 churches, from 1 writer.
Unlike some biblical series where you can share most of the cultural context in the first week or two, every week had a unique setting with its own cultural uniqueness.
In almost every letter Jesus says these words, “I know your deeds”. He also says, “I know your suffering” and “I know where you live”. Dictated through John, to each city, Jesus is intimately involved with each of these city churches. He has a unique encouragement and judgement to each of them. What comes out loud and clear is his desire for relationship and returned love. If there’s anything we get from these lettes, it’s a strong covenantal love that’s found in the OT, expressed through Jesus new covenant in the NT.
Unfortunately we’ve really messed up our interprtation of Revelation over the years. I think these letters are a good place for any one to start studying Revelation. It will make the book more practical and give them a desire to read the rest of Revelation with a new set of lenses.
I don’t think I’ve ever really driven through Buffalo. I know people go in there to shop, but the downtown core at 5pm on this Tuesday was pretty dead and vacant. You know there had to be a good reason to be found in this ‘armpit’ of America.
I was part of a class trip to see Bruce Cockburn in concert. That’s right…class trip. I haven’t been on one of these in over 10 years. However, when you take a course called, ‘Music, Prophecy & Culture’ with professor Brian Walsh (colossians remixed), things like this are bound to happen. For about 10 weeks we’ve been looking at the theoligical themes found in the music of Cockburn and U2. Well, U2 is a little hard to reach, so we took a trip to see the Canadian Singer/Songwriter performing in…Buffalo.
The trip involed some driving, some walking, dinner at a pup (with great company I might add) and the finale…Bruce Cockburn. The venue was not bad…the sound was great…the music was extraodinary…and the artist, well, very humble. He sang some old tunes and new tunes. One called Bagdad (which got the crowd riled up); a beautiful blues called ‘King Kong goes to Talahasse’ and a wonderful instrumental piece titled ‘The end of all rivers’; along with a number of other great tunes. After the concert we got a chance to meet the star (thanks to Brian Walsh…a long time fan & groupie), and he did not disapoint. Bruce came across as a quiet, humble and quite articulate man. He thanked us for making the trip, but especially for participating intently with our listening ears. He shared a few stories (i.e. about a person in one of his tunes & a George Bush Advisor that’s a big fan of his, …), shook all our hands and then signed a few papers and cd’s.
To be honest, I didn’t know that much about Bruce until this class. But after lots of listening and reading, I’ve really come to appreciate this musical and poetic legend. His voice, both through this hands and mouth, is one that has much to say about life, love & faith.
On a side note…hanging out with Brian Walsh (& Rob Vagacs) for 12 hours was quite the treat as well.
This past weekend we put on our 3rd lobby cafe in as many months. It’s gone really well so far. About 35 people showed up and there were about 5-6 local churches represented…plus a few unchurched friends. Very Cool. Our purpose is to see post-secondary students and young adults (both Christian and those who classify themselves as something else) connect and network in a safe and fun environment that promotes faith, relationships and anything menaingful to our lives. Things that are thriving…
- Table Talk discussion (it’s almost like we interupt them with our music or short talks…good)
- Great Band (we have couple of really talented people in out house band)
- Cheap Food (there’s no cover…just a donation box for support and expences)
- Cool Atmosphere (very casual…not churchy…friendly)
Check out our next cafe coming up on Saturday, April 21 @ 7:59pm
I have a bunch of stuff to blog about, but it seems that I don’t have the time. Stay tuned for an update very soon…
